ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP TEA
Saturday, February 10, 2018
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
at a private residence in Piedmont, CA
with Guest Speaker Dan Walters
Topic: "The State of the Golden State: Is it still golden?"
Dan Walters is an influential newspaper columnist who has chronicled the people and politics of California's state Capitol for more than 40 years. In January 2017, he joined CALmatters, the pubic interest journalism venture committed to explaining how California's state Capitol works and why it matters. His books include "The New California: Facing the 21st Century" and "The Third House: Lobbyists, Money and Power in Sacramento". Notably, Mr. Walters was the nation's youngest editor of a daily newspaper at age 22, and he joined the Sacramento Union's Capitol bureau in 1975 just as Jerry Brown began his first governorship. His perspective on over four decades of change in Sacramento is unequalled.

PARW's Community Service: Once again PARW is supporting the Oakland-based Super Stars Literacy Program. Last year we raised $1,100 to buy books for 2nd graders in 4 Oakland public schools. These students, who will graduate from the Program in June, will receive our books that will enable them to keep reading on their own during their summer break. Some of the children have never before had a book of their own before receiving our graduation gift.
WHY: Republican women care deeply about education and community service and have chosen to make a positive contribution to children in our community who have been identified as needing extra help.
TIMING: Mid April is the deadline for contributions.
BACKGROUND: The school-site based program includes daily after-school literacy and social-emotional skill development led by trained AmeriCorps members, in-school reading intervention coordinated with students' school-day teachers, and family engagement activities designed to help parents support their child's reading development and connect families to the school. This program originated in Oakland 12 years ago, and the success rates achieved when students graduate from the Program after 3 years are quite amazing.
For more information: Please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Studies have shown that students who cannot read proficiently by 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of school.
Please help us to help these at-risk students to be the best they can be!
